5 Heritage Pantry Staples Worth Stocking
A well-kept pantry is quiet insurance and quiet pleasure. Our great-grandparents stocked theirs with staples that lasted. Here are five worth keeping on hand.
1. Whole grains and heritage flour
Stone-milled and stored cool, they're the base of bread, porridge, and more.
2. Dried beans and legumes
Cheap, filling, and nearly indestructible on the shelf.
3. Honey and natural sweeteners
Honey keeps almost forever and does double duty in the kitchen and the medicine cabinet.
4. Salt and simple preserves
For seasoning, curing, and putting up the harvest the old way.
5. A good rendered fat
Tallow and lard were pantry cornerstones for cooking, and, in tallow's case, for skin too.
